checklist
- file at ic3.gov (FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center) — include all account numbers, transaction IDs, dollar amounts, and the method (wire, ACH, crypto, gift card, Zelle).
- file at ftc.gov/reportfraud — the FTC complaint feeds the Consumer Sentinel Network used by law enforcement and state AGs.
- if the fraud involved a credit card, dispute the charge with your issuer immediately — dispute windows close.
- if the fraud involved a bank wire, call the originating bank's wire fraud hotline — 24–72 hour recall window.
- if the fraud involved cryptocurrency, report to the exchange the payment went through — most exchanges have law enforcement response teams.
- if the fraud involved gift cards, call the gift card issuer's fraud line immediately — some issuers can freeze unspent balances.
- contact your state attorney general's consumer protection division — state resources differ from federal, and some states move faster.
- if the scam targeted an elder, contact the local Adult Protective Services agency and the NCOA Eldercare Locator (1-800-677-1116).
- preserve all evidence: transaction receipts, gift card numbers, screenshots, email threads, and caller ID logs before filing.
